Saddle Sore Riders, Inc. For Horse Enthusiasts Established in 1985 Dedicated to getting the backyard horse out of the backyard!!
August, 2010 NOOSE LETTER
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hello Saddle Sore Riders. We had a very busy July starting with Heartbar. This mountain camping tradition has been going on for at least 23 years and Kenny and Carolyn Provencio did a bang-up job (as usual). They also did an awesome job of pre-riding the trails, creating new ones, hosting, and even retelling the history of the location. Kenny even took some of us to “the drop off” at Coon Creek so we could carve our name for posterity and overlook Palm Springs. Dick, Lynda, and Jan entertained us with appetizers, stories, poker, horseshoes, and fond memories. Mark this on your calendar for next year – it’s a must! The Montgomerys hosted taco day on the 10th. Many of us were at Heartbar but those that stayed behind cooked or showed up to eat. Then we had the Bluff’s ride and even though it was hot we had about 25 riders. We supported the Day of the Cowboy with Kevin Whitaker taking the lead with the parking and Tawnya Clauser with the SSR booth. We finished with Susan Jackson’s awesome ride at Fallbrook. August has several rides scheduled including the Fiesta Island ride down by Sea World. Randi is going to lead us around an island and splash around in the waves. Bring your grill or firewood and some food as you are welcome to stick around after the ride, BBQ and enjoy the company of your fellow SSR members. We’ll have our usual taco day on the 14th and then we have another new riding location brought to you by Susan Jackson and that is Wrightwood. Susan has pre-ridden this mountain experience but unfortunately won’t be able to attend however; she has left the trail bossin’ to Caroline and me. We hope you come up and get a taste of mountain riding (similar to Heartbar) only a little over an hour away from Norco. To end August we have our campfire ride in Norco hosted by Tracy and Karen. This one sounds like fun with some riding and then an evening around a campfire. What a great summer in that we get to go to the mountains, the sea, back to the mountains and top off with s‘mores and a campfire! Another tradition we are renewing is the singing of the Saddle Sore Riders’ Song written by Chuck Ogden. Richard Julian brought his guitar to the general meeting to lead us as we all sang along. We plan on starting our general meetings with the singing of our song so keep your lyrics handy.
Take care, see you out on the trails, and get that backyard horse out of the backyard! Tammy Kapec President, Saddle Sore Riders, Inc. “Ain’t nothin’ like ridin’ a fine horse in new country”
Past Events Heart Bar, Friday, July 9th- July15th: We had a beautiful week in the San Gorgonio Mountains and the weather was perfect. We did have some thunder and lightning, but no rain as a few days threatened to do so…Nice cloud cover and mild temperatures kept us all comfortable. Friday after 3 pm we led 12 riders out on a short ride to acclimate them to the terrain, then we all partied well around the campfire that evening. Saturday’s ride took the 29 riders who attended to an abandoned college camp, where we had a nice long lunch. Sunday was a special day…26 riders rode out at 9:30 from the Disneyland Trail to High Meadow for a short lunch. After leaving lunch, we rode to Wilderness and then met charter and lifetime members at Aspen Grove for a special memorial for our friend and fellow member…Roy Beaver. His handsome family joined us in the celebration of Roy’s love for riding here; we figure that he and Duke are back in Norco by now (wink, wink). Jan and Linda got a free ride back up the hill to a parking lot; dang they looked right at home up on those horses! Back at camp, we got ready for appetizers, Pina Coladas and horseshoes. It takes an “ol’ horseshoer” to set up the grid for teams; thank you to Dick for that. Ross and Darlene won all of the dough….speaking of dough, we had a huge potluck with all of the trimmings; you can’t go hungry with this group but ya snooze, ya loose on Shorty’s cobbler! A big thank you to J.T. and Pat Reiley for getting the raffle tickets at the last minute; I totally forgot. Thank you to Claudia for doing a great job selling them, and to our friend Ross (who won the big basket as well.). Thank you to all of our generous and creative members for their donations; we had a great auction! The auction started out as “silent”, but soon got more boisterous as the night went on; thanks to our “sister duo”…auctioneer Lynda and bookie Jan for taking care of business. I would also like to say thank you to their lovely assistant…Haley Kapec…as the runner. There were some good bidding wars going on... (hick!) cocktails & bids = $$. We had campfires everynight, with S’Mores and hula hoop games. A big thank you to fire marshall Darlene for staying up and making certain that the fire was truly out; nice job! There were a few rowdy card games at “Casino” Wheeler, near Randi Verin’s camp. We rode every day and had nearly 15 campers who stayed the entire week. I really hope that everyone had a good trip and look forward to doing it again next year. I want to thank you for supporting this ride and keeping it going. Thanks to Danny & Linda Manning, Dick & Kim for pre-riding and working on the trails with us. Thank you Mike & Sigrid for drag riding on the weekend and to Terry McCluskey for drag riding the other days. Thank you to my good friend Claudia who helped me all around and kept things going in camp. A special thank you to my husband, Kenny, for being obsessive in pre-riding and making safe trails for us all, as well as being a great trail boss! Carolyn J Taco Day at the “American Legion:, July 10th: “Team” Montgomery headed up the crack team for another hugely successful taco day. The day was quite a light one due to the out of town Heart Bar ride, but we netted the club an additional $160…yeah! Mike would like to thank all of those that did attend, and a special thanks to the following individuals that helped make the day a success; Ian Gordon, Joyce Goodman, Patty Kennedy, Pam Witham, Dan Parks and Mickey Nichols! Mike and Waynette J The Bluff’s Ride, Sunday July 18th: Well…….this ride was on, then it was canceled, then it was on again. I was gettin’ dizzy. I was at Heartbar mindin’ when I received several text messages and calls saying the Army Corp of Engineers was going to open the flood gates and that would cause problems in the river bottom. When I returned I started pre-riding and kept losing water crossings due to quick sand. By the day of the ride I was down to one but we made due and this ride went off without a hitch. Yes, it was very hot but the brave 25 or so souls that came out seemed to enjoy themselves. We took a 30 minute cold beverage break in the middle and then went back down for another loop with a water crossing. Before we crossed the water, I halted the group and then I went across as Susan Jackson monitored my progress from the shore. I’m sure she was hoping beyond hope that I would disappear from sight lost to the clutches of the fast moving muddy river but that didn’t happen and I was able to take the rest of the riders across the water. Most of the route was under some kind of cover and not too bad. A ride is only as successful as the ground crew and pre-riding help that you get. My pre-riders were Mickey & Bryan Nichols, Caroline & Robert Verbree, Mike MacArthur, Terri Bartz, Mike & Sigrid Williams, Donna Loera, Dave & Jane Tabor, Dan & Wendy Parks, Renee Conant, Charlene Hall, Pam Witham, and Tawnya Clauser. Big thanks to Tawnya for making sure I made it safely across the water on several pre-rides including the night before the ride. Also, thanks to her daughters, Brittney & Makenzie for clearing the trails and marking the route with ribbons. I would also like to thank my drag riders Hank & Debi (you were good sports and should be knighted); outriders: Kevin Whitaker, Susan Jackson, Randi Verin, Caroline & Robert Verbree, Charlene Hall, Darlene Bjork, and Marge Buxton. My bartenders extraordinaire: Dick & Lynda Wheeler who not only bartended but did everything that goes along with being the bar along with Jan Beaver, and Ron Kapec. Help with ground crew from Joe Clauser & his brother, and Shelly Montgomery (who also did one end of the tie-line). Tawnya brought her camper with the air conditioning running in case anyone who stayed back wanted to keep cool. Also, thanks to Joe & Tawnya for the port-a-potties and Filippi’s for donating the ice. This was an in-town, no big deal ride and we actually made $211. Thank you to all that braved the heat and the unsure route to support the club – Tammy Kapec. Day of the Cowboy, Saturday July 24th: Saddle Sore Riders were asked once again to park cars for Norco Parks and Rec. services; we again said yes. We had a good showing with a total of eight volunteers; five on horseback and three on foot. We parked nearly 100 cars and trucks this year; many more than last year by far. It was a great day for parking cards and everyone had a good time. I would like to thank the following people for helping out when the need was presented: Charlene Hall, “Shorty” Carpenter, Liz Warren, Ron and Tammy Kapec, Terri McCluskey and Shelly Montgomery. I would also like to thank Michelle England, Keith and Henk from Norco Dept. of Parks and Rec. and community services for all of their help with the planning, marking of fire lines and parking signs; they were all a great help. Kevin Whitaker J Fallbrook Ride Saturday, July 31st: I want to thank everyone for coming to the Fallbrook Ride this past Saturday, and trying out a new trail. The good news is we lucked out in the weather department, it wasn’t too hot, and the other really good news is we didn’t see any rattlesnakes which I saw on the pre-rides. The bad news is I still have the snorkel award. Twenty two people showed up, twenty one with horses, and one with a camera. We had four non-members and there were seven people there who are members of the SSR whom I had never met. We started out with twenty one riders and nineteen people completed the group ride. Remember the first time you put saddle bags on your horse? What happened? You either lucked out or you didn’t. Well, Shelly Crawford’s palomino was not used to saddlebags, and was not about to carry them either. The horse through a fit and Shelly and Matt from Norco had their own ride. I wonder if either one of them fell in the water? Who would know?
I want to thank my friend Carol Diaz who showed me this trail about ten years ago. It is one of my favorite rides. Thank you to Tammy, Charlene Hall, Renee Conant, Mickey, Terri Bartz, and Greg Becker who helped me pre-ride and outride. Thanks to Tammy for selling the 50/50 tickets and for drag riding. The club made $55.00. Tanya won 33 dollars for 1st place and Greg Becker won 27 for 2nd place. I hope to see you on the trail soon; Susan.
